CV shafts loose on stub axle

Post by Gannon » Sun Jul 29, 2007 10:37 am

I got some new REPCO cv's the other week and started putting them in last night. I noticed that when i slid it onto the stub axle coming out of the gearbox, it wasnt a tight fit, even with the pin in it still wobbles around a bit.

Should it be a snug fit???

Gearbox is a 92 DL Carby 5sp D/R and i ordered shafts to that discription.

Anyone else come across this?

they should be snug..id imagine vibrations from here would be bad. I think subarino has bought some shaft from repco before, see what he says..

Ten years ago it would have been tight.... i usually find old shafts when ya remove em sometimes seam tight due to some crud getting in there... but mine have felt loose on the shaft ever since i can remember. And I have run a few different boxes.

Doesn't seam to depend on the brand of joint if thats what your wondering.

For future reference... i used to buy my CV's from Repco but was pretty outraged by the price... i now get them from Coventrys... the price of them there seamed to have gone down over the years.

My ripco souced CV shafts NSA 110's for the Brumby (National Parts are the supplier) were always a good fit on the gearbox stubs and neat clean fit at the bearing end. KEEP YOUR DOCKET in a safe place coz you have a five year/100,000k warranty and from my experience you'll be going in to replace them under warranty, a coupla times in that time. One of the nuts supplied was not hardened properly coz it woz soft as and stripped as approaching torque time !!

My GLTA DOJ's wobble a bit too, came with car, unknown history. yet to get any speed to see if it is a problem.

Not the wrong spline by any chance?
Also the stubs out of the gearbox are a little floppy most of the time. But thats just because they are only held in on the inside of the spider gears via a split ring.

I hope not, id assume that i wouldnt even get them on the stub if i had 25spline DOJ's.

Ive pulled out the left hand CV as it fell apart when i removed it. Im now running in RWD till i get my new shafts sorted.

I should've taken a pic of how much it moves

Thanks

If it's a carby gearbox then the stubs should have 23 splines.
It's possible you may have been supplied with 25 spline CV cups which would mean they would fit over the stubs but very loosely.
Doesn't take long to count them...

Even if they are right,i regularly see these with a noticeable amount of slop.
