D/R gearbox rattle

Post by littlewhiteute » Sat Oct 27, 2007 9:23 pm

Hi Guys,

Looking for some info on my D/R 4 speed gearbox.
The car has had a rattle in it since my purchase,
have since worked out it happens at 3000 + rpm in the first three gears AND ONLY in 2WD.
Does not do it any other time, in 4WD Hi or Lo, or 2WD top gear.
Sounds like noisy tappets, the noise is not from the engine, is definately from the gearbox.
Is this a common problem, any help greatly appreciated.
Regards

Gary ;)

Bennie,
Yes, I thought it may a bearing, I'd say front cluster bearing. Oil level is ok and quality appears normal, no leaks. It is quite annoying because it actually sounds like it's coming from the motor, rattly tappets. I adjusted the valvetrain to as tight as I dare, the motor sounds good with just a hint a tappet clearance, the timing is at 8 deg, the carb is perfect.
Thanks for your input.
Regards

Gary ;)

Could be a good time to drop a 5 speed dual range in it ;)

i had this exact same problem with my brumby. would you believe it was the tailshaft??!! it was. is it there when you rev it over 3k in neutral? put it on a hoist and get someone to rev it. it sounds like its coming from further up the front but touch the tailshft and its gone. it had a loose uni, so i replaced it and it disappeared for a while, then came back. when i did the 5spd conversion, i had a new shaft made and the guy filled the tube with foam, no noises now. hope this helps.

It's on the list. ;)

bpm, thanks for the tip about the tailshaft.
Mine does have a slightly worn front uni, will look at it while on holidays soon.
