Post by amk » Sat Dec 29, 2007 7:27 pm

Just overhauled an Ea82, put the engine back in the car engine is running fine, what the prob is that when I reverse the car starts jerking terribly but when I move forward it doesn’t jerk its perfect. What could the prob be?

New crankshaft, crankshaft bearings, con-rods, con-rod bearings, pistons, piston rings, seals, gaskets, that’s bout it. Was thinking may be the release bearing is the prob. Its an Ea-82, Carb, Manual Trans, 92 model, if it helps right hand drive.

Sounds like it might be a clutch or mounts problem, I'd say it's not related to the engine since it goes fine in forward. What are the mounts on the engine, gearbox, rear diff like?

WOW...! only $200 to do all that work to your motor...pistons, rings, bearings....etc ....:-Di might fly to Kenya and bring my motor, rebuild it then fly back(maybe tour while there) and i think i would save a few dollars rather than rebuild my motor here:D

It's not in 4x4 is it? The wheels may crab a little when reversing especially round corners...

its a 4wd 92 leone saloon, i was thinking it may be the c.v joints the do make noise while turning mounts are stock never changed them before, or could be the pressure plate might have got bit screwed while puttin the engine in.

amk - I rebuilt my MPFI EA82 this time last year. With a hone, new rings, piston heads, bearings, seals, headgaskets etc it came to almost $1000 - most of that cost coming from a new seal kit ($300+). Crazy. Now that engine is in for another check/get it going again - It recently got cooked by a dud radiator and an ignorant driver (no names mentioned but it was not me).

Now, about your problem. Reverse isn't about to let go in your box is it?

Hope you get it sorted and your country expriences some resolve and peace.

Cheers

Wow that a lot of money you spent on it, with that I think I would rather settle for another engine probably an Ej series with the gearbox and Ecu is what I get for that money.

I’m thinking by end of year to change the engine, would like a turbo engine this time round.

Another prob started, early mornings or when the engine gets heated up the oil light doesn’t go meaning oil pressure is less correct me if im wrong plz, the oil pump is not even a month old… any ideas as to why this happening?

Regarding the jerking I think the prob is in the gear box… I took pics of the pressure plate, clutch plate release bearing… seems ok to me ill post it up later…

Coming to country, don’t think there will be peace when the guy lies openly holding the Holy Book (Bible) how can there be peace…

Yeah amk, it was a lot of money but spent over the course of 6 months so it wasn't as painful as it sounds. Parts and machining etc over here cost more than over there i'd imagine. It would cost me more than that to do a simple EJ conversion but hindsight suggests it would have been the better move had I have known about the conversion...

I just hope now that there has not been any warping of the cylinders or piston heads from the overheating...

The question is, if it is the gearbox, what would cause it to jerk but only in reverse? It's not a rear diff mount or anything?
