EA81 Engine Query

Post by bles » Mon Jan 21, 2008 3:15 pm

Hi Guy's,
I'm new to this site, so bare with me........

I'm after some info.on the EA81 engine....in particular with the Electronic Ignition versions...

The story so far.. I purchased a 1984 GL Wagon for my son a while ago, which required a replacement engine...

This I got from a Importer in Brisbane...

The problem is that the EA81 version delivered and now fitted is an Electronic Ignition version which I don't think was standard for this model in Australia...

I need to get a replacement distributor cap...as the one originally supplied is stuffed...

Am I right in thinking that I could use an EA82 cap from the L series ???

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated....

Electronic engines were definitely available in Aus a distributor cap should be readily available.I am pretty sure all Brumbys after 1985 were electronic. The L series moved on with the EA82 engine whilst the Brumby retained the EA81 up to about 1992.I had a 1985 brumby and had no trouble finding caps,as to using the L cap someone else should know that.

There are two types of distributor for these engines. Hitachi or a Nippon Denso. Check to see if there is any marks such as 'ND' on the existing cap. The ND also has a little black breather on the cap.

Both are available from places such as Repco or Supercheap. If your replacement engine is like the one in my shed, it will be a Nippon Denso.

As has been said, the latter model Brumbys were electronic so you need a cap from one of these. Not exactly sure when they changed over but if you ask for a post '89 Brumby dissy cap you'll be right.

electronic dissy

EA81's from model year 1984 on were electronic ignition. In the Hitachi the points and electronic dissy's used the same cap & rotor (at least in 1983 points and 1984 electronic versions). Check genuine pricing as this is quite often competetive.

Genuine Part #'s for Hitachi Dissy (1983 - 1984) - Points and electronic use the same.

Cap # 49100-7001
Rotor # 49101-7011

Also, if changing from points to electronic, don't forget to change the coil to a straight 12v one.
