Horsepower from the front of the engine
Horsepower from the front of the engine
Howdy to all,
I am a little worried about a part of my 'grand plan'.
Advice needed.
I need to draw two lots of 5.5 horsepower (11 max total) from the FRONT of an EJ22.
I want to run an Ingersol Rand hookah diving compressor and a high pressure water pump.
Could I run these with electo clutches (ala A/C compressor style) and off the serpentine belt system?
How much can the bearings handle I wonder?
Pipe up if you have something to say...

EJ22 Dual range AWD lifted, widened and much happier now thanks very much.
1991 L Series wagon, white and perfectly normal apart from the ticking, no I think that is normal.
Jet boat..webbered EA81 with a hybrid tin dish welded and glued to it.

give it a go it should work ok. can you put a pully onto the front of the harmonic balancer and take power from there. the other way and maybe the best for the engine is to mount a small drive shaft of the HB out to a bearing that can handle the load you want to put onto it. trucks can use this sort of system to drive hydralic pumps etc.
it won't be hard to do and there are heaps of ways to do it.

my last 4wd that i built and had fun scaring subarus on fire trails:twisted:
full NSW rego. 270liters diesel. 140liters of water. airide suspension on front axle.
self contained for a week with 6 adults. Island cab was cut and narrowed 300mm to fit the chassis.
Great fun off road. Now lives in FIJI as a mobile dentists truck.

hi brumberty
not wanting to be a party pooper . remember exhaust fumes . put the air inlet out of exhausts way . but i recon you would know that.
i run a pressure cleaner pump of the harmonic ballancer of a dosile hylux it pulls 13 hp when you pull the triger . been there for 18 or so mths and its ok.
just my 2 bobs worth dibs

Remember that devices like an air conditioner compressor, air pump or water pump draw a unit amount of torque not horsepower. So something requiring 5hp at 3000rpm will require 10hp at 6000rpm (roughly)
Car aircons usually draw in the vicinity of 7-10Nm
I cant remember the conversion for HP/TQ
Something along the lines of HP = TQxRPM/5200
