I have the same problem with my 91 L series...it probably best to fix it asap...
metal on metal not a good thing. Im actually doing the full deal, replacing lifters, oil seals and rebuilding the oil pump.
I done the seals in the 90 L series but after a couple of months the tapping slowly came bak.

Mine has actually scooted for a few weeks, a little ticking today but nothing like it has been. I think it might have something to do with parking it on my slanted driveway

Well been nearly a week since i changed oil and filter, went with magnatec and although there's been a slight improvement with reducing lifter tick, damn sure i can hear the oil pump chucking a fit every so often(near start up and after running temp) So I too will be watching Dutchys' posts with great interest. Also while trying to isolate locations of various odd sounds from the motor, hearing variations at the dizzy, which was adjusted by mechanics last time i let them near it. Ya know it almost seems they are trying to convince me to swap over to an ea82t? If I could I would, but also I would just go and buy a lib and be done with it. anyways, will hafta focus on the dramas at hand and even though it's noisy it's still running ......for now.

Just on a follow up note. I saw some stuff in repco called "lifter free" for say $10 a bottle. Bought it, emptied the bottle into my oil and hell, i'll be damned...the lifters have gone away.....for now. Not sure if its just a coincidence, but it seems to be running nicer too.

cant lose for $10. Doesnt change oil viscosity, stays in till next oil change, and apparently cleans lifters and stops ticks in non-permanently damaged cases.

i just got my hands on a 86 L sreies that had a pretty bad tick.

tryed the $10 bottle, new filter and 15-40 oil. which did bugger all!

then i buy pump seals ($35 kit) which work no tick at all now, but the previous owner had tryed this and in doing so crimped the mickey mouse "o" ring. it must have moved out of the grove when he put it on.

and he over tightend the belt cover bolts, had to brake them off and buy some more covers ($100)

Had lifter tick in my rs for a while when i was running mineral oil, but just changed back to semi synthetic and has gone. Also changed from penrite to valvoline synguard and theres a huge improvement comparing the equivilent 10 - 40w oils.

Nothing wrong with running diesel oil, and it will do a great job of cleaning the internals. I just wouldn't run it for more than 5,000km which you shouldn't really need to anyway.

I have often wondered about doing that too. Have heard of others using diesel oil and then driving the car rather than the more drastic using diesel fuel but running for 30min the draining.

Has anyone done this or have opinions to or against using diesel oil as a cleaning agent?

OK, My 91' Lib had this problem just recently. I had only just bought it and when I replaced the oil I made the mistake of putting 20W50, as it was an older car. About 2 weeks later the lifter tick started up, very violently. It wasn't just when cold but all the time.

I then realized I needed to put in 10w - 30 oil and replaced the filter too. The tick still persisted so I used the 'lifter free' nulon stuff from repco. The tick STILL persisted.

I kept driving the car for roughly a month and the day I was going to book in to get the lifters replaced (a costly procedure) the ticking stopped and has not returned since.

I dont know what to make of this really, I just thought i'd add it to the collection of stories of this annoying dilemma.
