You might find that the engine will run hotter now (I think that's right) that the ERG has been removed. The ERG is used to reduce nasty pollutants in the exhaust emissions by dropping the combustion temp... Time will tell I guess - and a neat job you've done there!

I dont wanna turn this into a EGR is good or bad debate...
Yeah there are heaps of stories whether or not EGR is good or bad and everyone has there own oppinion...

Personally i think the car manurfactures feeds us crap that its good so we don't remove it..
U can't blame them cause they are just doing there job and have to look good for the guys in the green suits.. blah blah blah..

Anyway enough of that, im of to the wreckers down Budgi 2day with my tool box...
Hopefully return with a half decent EA82 MPFI head.... yay!!

Bugger..!

The one i went to pick up 2day was covered in crap.. So i gave it a good wash in the parts washer at the wreckers... It had cracks between both sets of valve seats.. I filled the inlet and exhaust ports up with degreaser didn't seem to leek, but wasn't keen on taking a gamble on a dodgy part..

So far ive rung 3 wreckers that are local, 4 in Newcastle area and 6 on the Central Coast... With no luck..

These heads seem to be as rare as rockin-horse sh*t...

Sydney is my next target lol....

Did I see an earlier post here somewhere that said that the cracks between the valve seats was common and nothing to worry about as long as that was all they went to and not down the tract?

Yes i have heard that before too... Iv'e also heard that if you give the the crack a few hits with a peening hammer it will strengthen the area around the crack and it will not develop any further.... But the cracks in my head have already been peened once and that failed to stop it.. I guess sometimes you can get away with it and sometimes you can't.. Probably depends on how you drive too...

EGR lowers NO emissions because "leaking" spent gasses back into the combustion chambers lowers combustion temps .
As a by product this can also be used to suppress detonation in some instances .

It's highly likely that most if not all MPFI EA82 heads are cracked between the valve seats . If all else fails get a set repaired .
Of the three sets of EFI 82 heads I've seen most were cracked and the only ones that weren't were the ones Gareth sent me for my rebuilt engine .
My guess is that Subaru ran reasonably high exhaust gas temps on these engines for emissions in the "dark/dinosaur" era and the castings/cooling jackets were not quite up to the task .

Given a choice sane EGT's may help - linear rate adjustable FPR if running EFI ?

Cheers A .

mpfi heads

Post by Wraith » Wed Jul 22, 2009 7:03 pm

Hello Porty!!

I have a matched set of MPFI heads in good nick if you want em. I was just about to list them on Ebay!!! LOL

I grabbed them off an 92 L series that had been hit in the rear. The odemeter read 140,000kms.

I had intended to modifiy them slightly for use on a EA82 Turbo I was trying to restore. But time and life prevented me from doing so!!

The heads are fine. I have the cam boxes and rocker covers as well. I also have the block if you are interested. I will go outside now to check if they have cracks between the valve seats. From memory they were none, but let me go check.

mpfi heads

Post by Wraith » Wed Jul 22, 2009 7:37 pm

OK, i just got back in from the shed. FARK its cold.... LOL

Anyways, the space between all 4 sets of valves HAVE been peened. Not by me however.

I know that the head gaskets on this engine were done at 110,000 kms due to coolant loss. So I imagine that they were peened at that point. The repair has held, as there are NO cracks now. The repair has held for some 30,000kms.

Like I said in my earlier post, the engine was purring beautifully before the car it was in got hit in the rear at a set of traffic lights, writing it off. :(

The heads are not warped or cracked, I checked em. No discernible slop in the valves. Could do with a valve lap if you are motivated enough, but the valve seats look great. Will need fresh valve stem seals.

Cam case is in great nick too. I got as far as replacing the oil seals and O ring at the front of the cams. Used genuine seals.

Rocker covers are fine. Has original gaskets in em still. You may or may not need new ones. They were replaced when the head gaskets were done, so they have only 30k on em. Still soft and pliable, but your call to replace them or not.

Also found the intake gaskets. Brand new. Included if you want em. Genuine too.

I dont think I missed anything. I can send photos if you want.

Postage to where you are at is gonna hurt!!

PM me and we can take it from there.

ok ok... Its alive..!!!!
Im so stoked... She fired up first go 2.... yay yay yay...
I really owe it to this brilliant forum.... There is just tonnes n tonnes of great info on here... There is no way i would have been able to rebuild my L without it..

The heads took forever but it was worth it in the end, i nearly died when he gave me the price over the phone......

Ok i was so excited putting it all back together i didn't really take any photos of the rebuild process... When she first fired up it had the worst TOD ive ever heard.. But after about 10mins of drivin n revvin her up to 4000rpm a few times the tick is now gone for good.. even when i start her cold...

Um, heres one thing to remeber, notice the water pipe running over the RH side of the block in this photo.. It must go on BEFORE you put the inlet manifold on... Because im fairly sure you can't put it on after.. I found this out the hard way.. I just had to end up running a piece of heater hose under the manifold and into the back of the water pump..

Image

I cant really think of any other dramas i had... And nothing bad has showed up yet.. So far so good...

Ok heres a pic of my inlent manifold (half dressed)

Image

heres a few photos of the heads when i got them home.. They got the full service:

Pressure/Crack tested
corosions welded
Welsh plugs
Valve seats cut
Valve heights ajusted
Stem seals
Shaved
I think thats everthing..

Everything checked out ok, and the head is in great codition.. Thanks again..

Hey Porty,

How has the scooby run since you did the work?

been reading your thread for advice, I am replacing a head gasket for the first time on a 91 GL that I bought for $300.

I'm curious where you got your head gasket set from, I just went to repco and they want $350 for it, which seems like a bit too much.

I have been scouring online autopart distributors and ebay but cant find anything.

Cheers

-Ben
