Why do you say it's a different ratio? If it is just because of the feel of power it might be that the auto was sucking the power.

Hmm, not too sure now. Im pretty sure its different because I could hear the rears slipping when I reversed out of the garage in 4wd. I did it a few times to be sure. Just crawled under there and started pulling it out, but noticed it has simmilar numbers and symbals on it. "756" is on both pretty large. The man is deffinately a 3.7 because its still got its sticker on it. Anyone know the final drive ratio for the 1982 3at? Might just jack up a tyre and measure it.

yep, diffs are different. Manual one is higher geared. auto must be a 3.9. Was in the process of changing them but got snagged with the cv's seized onto the splines. Bolted it back up and will change it another day.

Ok fella's. Been up since 7.30 thismorning trying to get these CV cups off. No Cigar. Tried Heat, big hammer, then went to SCA and got a 8lb sledge, still nothing. Tried rope around the cup and a kangaroo jack against the hub, snapped the rope. Tried heavier rope, snapped the heavier rope. Tried some chain. It scared the absolute crap outa me after a little bit so I stopped jacking and tried whacking it with a gimpy while it was under load, Still nothing. Before I completely destroy something Is their anything other than the pin holding the cup on? Next method involves my brothers xr6 on the other side of the chain for some impulse tugging.

hahahaha I am going through exactly the same thing on one of my Brumbys.
Spray liberally with penetrating oil and let it sit for a day or 2 may help.

When you are in this situation, don't you just feel like you need to roll the bitch over on her roof just so you can work a bit easier ?

Arh crap Steptoe, You crack me up! if only you know how close we came.....

Well, good news errrrr,,, sort of. Got one side off fine. Looks like someone used it as a boat anchor at some point. May make some of you cringe but I got it off by dropping the diff down and smashing it across with the sledge. Took about 3 blows. However, as much as I, hmmmm, persuaded it, no budge on the other side. So, tied some rope around it and hooked it up to my brothers XR6T. Gave it a good yank. No good, only draging my wagon along sideways. Eventually the CV failed and the cup came apart. Great. Now I have a half smashed diff with a cv cup seized onto it. Short of having a press I gave it a little, err tap with the sledge which only ended with a smashed cup and socked bar.

So I got two new driveshafts on the way. Will bolt the new diff up for the mean time. Little nervous to look at the hubs at the moment.

So whats the good news???? Buddy came around and is giving me an intercooler off his XR5! should give me a little more poke in the wagon.

If you get stuck Niterida, Im happy to bring the Sledge around and smash your diff too :D

'bout four years of corrosion on my CV pin pusher , actually thought it had been tossed - but it is out there and think it is my only 3.9 diff !!

Might have to borrow an XR6 to get my punch out first !! It is stamped SUBARU so I know which one to grab for the job, well used to ....:(

OK you WIN! I'd say a few bystanders lost a little bit a wee watching that happen :D :D

My punch was a well cared for silver zinc finish when it went in ...... time to buy a new one.

As for the diff, it is time to have another go and drill the pin out from the other side? Or just take it away, maybe salvage the rear cover for someone ?

Ha, yeah I didnt really want to wreck it. One off blow with the hammer cracked the cover. Would probably be ok with just some bolts and a new back cover.

Nah the whole thing is going in the bin, along with the socket adaptor and cup. I hit that socket adaptor so hard it pushed about half an inch into the shaft and muchroomed the head. I do believe that the cv and diff became one piece a few years ago. Auto gearbox will probably follow it into the bin if someone doesnt want it. Now to find out how bad the splines in the hubs are rusted.....

Ouch - Doug ... Have you Tried using a puller ? ... ( you can pick one up from supercheap for around $ 40 )

P.S. - Steptoe ... That punch could be rescued, it just needs a bit of TLC ... :)

Can't drill these pins. I found the best way to do it was grind it down to the splines with a grinder disc - the fat one. Do both sides then your pin problem is sorted. I still use this CV in the rear of Ruby Scoo today :D To get the stub axle out you then need to get the rest of the pin out, I shattered it then picked out the pieces. After this I was able to access the torx bolt - I just used a SCheap 8mm deep HEX socket to crack the torx bolt.

The other way to get the CV cup off is to grind the stub axle off: grind it off completely. This should allow you to get the diff centre out. Then you can remove the rest of the axle as you should have cut through the torx bolt.

Cheers

Nah havent tried a puller. A press would be my best bet. Not interested any more though as the whole lot is going in the bin. Thismorning I pulled off the wheels and tapped the driveshafts off the hubs spline. Took all of 30min. Only one needed heat :D. Are the subaru gods smiling down apon me today??? :D In all seriousness though its a lot easier to get a good whack on the hub side cups. Should have started off that way.......Anyhow new diff all bolted up, when the new driveshafts arrive they should be able to go straight in with a good lathering of anti-seize.

Question, i can drive the car without the rear driveshafts right? My wheels aint gonna fall off right?

Yes you can. There's no issue with doing this with the MY's and L series. Just so long as you have the tail shaft in the back of the gearbox you'll be right ;)
