You can pick up complete L wagons for about $300 with a bit of luck, eg.

The 5 speed doesn't really offer much improvement over the 4 speed, the only issue I had with the 4 speed was third was too low for a 60km zone, and fourth was too high. 1st and 2nd are the same between the two boxes.
1989 Brumby - Shiny new red paint, stroked EJ20 phase 2 SOHC with Darton sleeves bored to EJ22, Wiseco high-compression pistons, Delta 2000 grind cams , EJ/XT6 5 stud with WRX 4/2 pots, 5-speed, 86 GTS seats and so much more.
Contact me for reproduction XT6 hubs...and EA82 rear discs.

That's one thing that this gearbox conversion is about - 4th being an extra gear between 3rd and top gear.

The other reason for this gearbox conversion is that IMO the 5 speed is less agricultural in response/feel to the operator and you get rid of that linkage issue of the 4 speed.

Not a hard conversion to do once you understand what's needed. Would probably cost more than most first realise with the modified tail shaft - I still reckon the two piece is the best option as it usually eliminates any vibration issues that can occur with a modified (or sometimes even new) tail shaft.

Cheers

You could always get an auto brat from the US of A

Seems it may have been a factory option

With P/S and A/C
You know you are getting old when the candles on your birthday cake start to cost more than the cake itself.
