How to split a gearbox?

Post by PeeJay » Tue Jan 17, 2006 9:14 pm

I'm currently in the process of having a got at swaping the 1.5 low range into my EA AWD box. I've taken all the bolts out, but was wondering if there is a trick to getting the casing apart (chisel, screwdriver?)
The one I was playing with at the wreckers was already apart when I found it.

You want to have it lying on the passenger side. There are a couple of "tongues" that are proud of the case which with a very gentle tap will help the case to split. I presume you have the extension off allready? Also need the input shaft bolts off and the ones holding the pinion shaft to the case at the other end.

Thanks, didn't end up being as hard as I thought.

How do you get the extension shaft / transfer case off an EA81 gearbox ? I have a dead one I want to have a look through for interest. I assume I am missing something really obvious but when I try to separate the three main sections I get about a half inch gap between them then everything stops moving.

Yeah, I got the same gap but I only needed to get to the bolts holding on the main bearing. I think there may have been some little grub screws somewhere that could be undone?

Have you undone the 10mm bolt in the selector shaft that hold the reverse spring/lever in place? You need to remove the top inspection cover to get at it. Without this out the shifter won't disengage from the selector shafts.
