Ive come to the conclusion that i have blown the HG in my EA82T.

Ive had an intermittent fault with my fans and they failed to start one day while i was waiting in traffic. Temp needle reached 3/4 gauge. Now when i open the radiator cap, a bubble appears about once a second and it smells oily.

The car is fine while crusing, but if i stop moving, it warms up a bit (even though the fans are on) and i get an airlock in the radiator.

Now i know im gonna have to replace the headgaskets.

But in the short term, ive seen a little bottle of stuff that is supposedly liquid glass and you add it to the radiator and it seals up small HG leaks.

Im tempted to use it, but what are the downsides?

Thats what i thought, i was also worried about it clogging up the cooling passage in the turbo.

dont assume youve done a HG.

get it tested.

heated EA82turbos eat heads, well crack them.
Got a set of heads if you need them, also got 3 turbo motors if you need them. Check carefully as you proceed and don't waste time with the "radiator blocking sealers" . Do it properly the first time, or else it usually comes back to bite.

It's an EA82 turbo, he blew the headgasket the moment he started it, it's just been getting worse over time :P

ACL Holamar Head gasket compound - It’s the only thing that holds the head gaskets on.......

If one is allowed to endorse or recommend a product from previous experience I have seen a CHEMIcal WELDing product work in a few situations sometimes seemingly permanent and even seen it at bunnings on their shelves at less than fifteen dollars. If it buys some time before you redo gaskets and clean radiator it would be well spent if it does fix YOUR problem

mat i have used chemi weld on my ea 82 less than one month ago for a tempery fix of a small head gasket leak and it has worked a treat... no longer loses coolant and runs much better on startup...
i got a bottle for $11 at my local servo...
i wouldn use it forevere but for a quick fix to keep it going... it works...

chemiweld in the white bottle or metallic Seal Up ftw! helped me out once. no undesired consequences

yeh i used chemiweld on my ea81 i did 50,000km on it until the head gaskets really let got the only down side was sometimes the copper solution got hot enough to cause run on after the key was turned off.

Just monotorques from repco are the go, I think about $40 each or so... You may have luck on ebay if you have time, I sold a set on there earlier in the year (or last year I can't remember)

ACL Monotorque for sure and a little ACL Hylomar Gasket Spray is always good insurance a good tip too is to make sure you have two (head and block) clean surfaces, I find using the sharping stone, with a heap of CRC, to be the best

As for Copper Head Gaskets, they are great if your going to spend big money on o'ringing the block, heads and your going to put outrageous boost through your EA82T (but I'd not recommended that )

Go genuine Subaru -> There about $50ea & they have changed the compound since the original gaskets that would have been in the EA82/T from factory. There now an 'epoxy' style and they bond better to the head/block....

Never had a genuine head gasket let go in all of my EA82T's & most of them were running 14PSI.

Just my 2c worth.....

I also like to use genuine gaskets where possible

Subaru EA82T $77.25each or ACL Monotorque $32.00each but it's all personal choice as I've never had a problem with either. I've got a RX with a VF12 with TMIC and running 18psi... AWESOME FUN !!

Are the genuine Subaru ones monotorques?

Should i still use head gasket compound when using genuine gaskets?

No. Monotorque is a ACL product.
Not as good as genuine.

I still use Hylomar on genuine gaskets.....

I thought 'monotorque' meant that you only have to torque the gaskets once. As opposed to where you have to remove the cam covers and re-torque the headbolts after a warm-up - cool-down cycle.

So can the genuine gaskets be torqued only once?
