Just want to get an idea of what brand & grade of oil most people run.

1. What brand of oil do you use?

2. Why do you use that brand?

3. What weight is the oil? (ie 20W50)

4. Why that particular weight of oil?

2. Not quite sure... Guess its been around for a while.

4. High K's, Got something bit thicker to help protect.

i dont know much bout oil but seems to work for me.

EA82 unknown K's - the cheap $20 oil for 5 litres...

Cos I'm a uni student and it does the job.

20-50w cos that's what it comes as.

both my ej20's have penrite sin10.

Cos its a great oil. Is it a co-incidence that when i swap to a shit valvoline oil that i get big end rattle? I think not!!

Downside is its expensive! But i never budget with such a crutial thing.

1. Valvoline Semi Synth in a 286000k MPFI EA82

2. I always use it because Lawsey says so.....really it tends to stop the annying tic tic tic in the EA82

3. 10W40 or even a 15W40

4. EA motors love a semi synth and doesnt foam up as much(look at your oil when you drain it next time and look at the aeration in full mineral oils...). Besides it is $24 in Big W so I grab a couple of bottles when it is on special(I think I have 6 x 5l containers now)

1. Castrol - going to change to Amsoil later on.

2. I used to get the Castrol cheap

3. 5w30 and now 0w30

4. Subaru and alot of people said too....

The name of the thread says it all, But castrol GTX2 I used this in my old car because it was well worn in and this was the stickiest oil I could find for a respectable price SM grade I think (SJ grade at the time), I geuss I just haven't had a need to change types yet!

Australian made. It's top quality and unlike others brands they don't have a cheap variety that sometimes gets mixed with the premium variety.

I have a snoggin big V8 in a 3 tonne car. The oil works very hard and I need it to protect my engine. Not only that I use LPG and I find the heavier weight helps to resist the acid build up that LPG has in lighter weight oils. I also use it in my fathers LPG powered V6 and my sisters V8 Aussie muscle car made by an Aussie racing icon.

One more comment. I change my filter every time I change my oil (5000km) and the Penrite has no detrimental effects on the filter. The oil and filter does it job and does it well. While the oil does discolour (goes black) it keeps my engine clean as well as protects it. A good quality oil and filter will save you heaps in maintenance costs over the life of an engine.

Maybe you should also ask why people don't use other brands.

I run Castrol Magnatec 10w30 in my 330,000km old ea82.

I run castrol because my last three places of work have used castrol oil, and it seems to stay nicer for longer compared to the valvoline. 10w30 because thats what the subaru specified grade is, and I don't have any problems with it burning oil or leaking oil (if i did, i'd fix the problem rather than running different thicker oil)

I change the oil every 5000km which seems to keep the lifters reasonably happy. I'm told my another mechanic with an L series that if I run 5w40 it keeps the lifters even happier.

Penrite , 15w-60w i think it is.

Expensive. I used to castrol magnetic but after a recent switch to penrite It completely got rid of a nasty lifter tick noise that was starting to appear.

Any lighter and it will leak out, any heavier and it won't get around the motor properly I guess.


In my gearbox I run Fuchs RX80, because I have had a couple of Subaru gearboxes improve after using putting it in.

Oh God I just put some Caltex 10W30 oil in and the very next day I'm blowing white smoke. 2-3k RPM feels as rough as 3-4k used to.

I'm going straight back to Castrol 'Pre-88' oil. Never again....

10W 30 hey perhaps thats why the old EAs are renown for lifter tick most of the ones I know are running a 20 grade either that or they've been running the thicker grade for too long and the oil pump isn't used to pumping the lighter oil anymore. I may have to try this in my brumby sounds more like sewing machine oil though!

Went to a good quality 15-40 the other day. So far it seems to be making a bit of difference to engine noise in the old Brumby
