engine problems

Post by JAWNO » Tue Apr 07, 2009 9:29 pm

hey guys im new and have a question to ask

my subaru lib 92 (auto) wagon has had some problems for a while with the engine... the problem usually arises when the engine is under load such as a big hill or quick acceleration.

symtoms are as follows...
- upon depressing the pedal and subsequently applying the engine to load, the engine will begin to knock (the engine knocks even without a hill involved depending on how aggressively the car is being driven).
- if the engine is laboured for approx 30-60 seconds, the engine will then lose power and either stall or come to a powerless halt. when the engine does not stall, the engine vibrates off its harmonic balance which i beleive is one of the cylinders miss firing.
- if the car is turned off for approx 30 secs and turned over again, the problem is fixed, but the engine will still knock.

the coil pack has been replaced and the problem was solved for some time but it has re-emerged again. i also replaced the spark plugs and again the problem was good for some while but lately its back to its old self...

any advice or help would be much appreciated

Well ignition system goes coil pack > distributor > leads > spark plugs

Maybe check the dizzy cap for any tracks in it.

Also - if its carby cleaning the carby jets could help as it may just be that its starving for fuel when the car is on certain angles.

Basically I'd check anything fuel related, seems like you've done almost everything in terms of the ignition system

Its EFI, no carby in it! and no dizzy cap as well...

JAWNO -
yes that is the first place is the timing belt, apart from that check fuel supply.
