EA81 Questions

Ok i have a 1991 Brumby, The guy before me changed the engine to another EA81 for some reason. What i want to know is the engine that was in the car before he changed it has no holes for EGR however the new one does. I can only assume that the engine is out of a L Series that would have had EGR. Did the Brumby actually use EGR as it is a commercial? Will the engine still work normally in the brumby and what do i do about the EGR?? Im not really sure what to do at the moment, need to sort is as the brumby is unlicensed and i need to get it over the pits!

Also where is the engine number??

EA81 could not have come from an L series, maybe an MY sedan or wagon. I have seen a few different EGR set ups on EA81, they all sort of passed me by in the understand dept until I tinkered with my EA82T. To hhok one up you really need it to operate once at op temp. Some EA81 and 82 had an external mounted temp thermal vac switch on inlet manifold mounted on a bracket looking like a water temp unit mounted in mid air. Find one of these mount it to the manifold inlet just so it feels the temp not actually screwed in itself and hook up its vac line to egr.

engine number on RHS block at front under all the grease , dirt and crud under beside,dizzy

The engine will run better and have more power if you run the engine with out the egr as it recycles exhaust gases back into the intake to lower the emissions .

Yeah engine number is near the starter motor.
EA81 only in MY based cars but there were heaps and heaps of subtle changes over the years. After all they went all the way from ~1980 thru to ~1992 (I think?).

Brumby did use ERG valve as they progressed towards 1992 as the new regulations came into being.

Best thing you can do is find the same year brumby as yours at the wreckers and buy the intake manifold/carbie off that engine (along with all the ERG gear) - it'll bolt straight on and with a little bit of playing around you'll have it running like it used to/should be with ERG. I'm sure the '91 model had it, I know my GF's mum's brumby (89) has one...
