Im driving a 89 brumby with the Z493 filter

my wifes liberty uses the Z 495 filter

can I use the Z 495 or is the thread different to the Z493 they look nearly the same when you hold them

just curious as the Z 493 is around 10 dollars more than the Z 495

are there any other filters that can be used on an ea 81 motor without killing it

ok so the thread is metric on the liberty Z495 filter

I did a search at ryco and found all these filters that are around the same size with the same 3/4 thread as the Z493

filter - Height - oil seal - seam diameter - thread

Z125 -76mm - 63mm -82mm -3/4-16-UNF-2Bmm (closest to Z493)

Z158 -101mm - 63mm -82mm 3/4-16-UNF-2Bmm

Z145A -102mm - 63mm -82mm -3/4-16-UNF-2Bmm

Z172 -102mm - 63mm - 82mm -3/4-16-UNF-2Bmm

has anyone heard of people using any of these filters on an ea81 motor or like me is any one game emough to do it

Why not just get the equivalent in a cheaper brand?

BTW you might also need to consider the length of the thread.

I always use the Z145A on my EA81. Not really sure why but the rod knock seems a little quieter than when using the Z493!

Also have a look a Subaru Filters as they are lot better build and not that much more expensive. around $18

Subaru filters that I buy is $12 each. That is why I go for genuine filters.

I have been using the Z145A on my EA82T for years...

I have been using the brand Sakura for months now. The make Nissan, Mitsubishi & some Toyota genuine filters & there a good price....

Are they any good? Local parts guy sells them an i am a little wary because of the little voice in my head that says "cheap = nasty"

What company makes Subaru's filters?

Although at less than $20 each, Genuine ones dont seem so bad

living in Australind which is 20 minutes from Bunbury which is 2 hours from Perth seems to mean freight is charged on gold weight (hmmm that weighs 20 grams gold is 40$ a gram hmmmm) well not that bad but a 22 dollar filter in perth costs 28 dollars in Bunbury so if I can find a comparable cheaper ryco I will use it

next time Im at big W I will get prices for the Z125 and the z145a

My question is has anyone tried purchasing parts from them? are they really good? i am just looking for subaru oil filter. let me know if you are selling one guys or if ever you know some sites where to find cheap parts. thanks in advance. Hmm interesting that I found this thread. I have just starting doing my own work to the brumby to save money and get to know her a bit better and its been about 10,000 k's since last mechanic serviced it so doing the oil and filter.

Didn't actually think to look at the filter that was on the ute and went by the ryco catalogue so bought the Z493. Began draining oil couple of minutes ago and went to pull filter off (which by the way was barely hand tight) and found it was the Z145A. Will be interesting to note now how the engine sounds after this change and see if there is a noticeable difference between filters.

Would like to know if there was a legitimate reason to use the Z145A or if it was merely the one that was readily available last service.

not sure on the answer but its okay to put your filter on just hand tight.

when you start it the pressure sucks the filter onto the motor. I never do mine up more than hand tight. Never hand any issues.

Yeh, I dunno, this didn't even feel hand tight. Maybe I just have a strong grip. The wrench certainly wasnt necessary to get it off.

Also replaced the oil filler cap. It looks like it still had the original cap (with some japanese on it), the bugger barely stays on. New one is tight as, I love it.

Edit: Cant really discern a difference in sound between the Z145A and Z493, but at this early stage with fresh oil it might not be a good time to call it. I guess I will know in 5-10,000 k's.

I'm interested in alternate oil filters as well because I get burned buying Z493 filters for some stupid reason .

The way I measure an oil filter with vernier calipers is the rolled lip diameter at the base , then the case diameter , then the height/or length in sideways Subie guise .
I need to compare the case diameter and "length" of these alternatives and if I can find one the same both ways and cheaper I'm all ears .

you just have to remember that different cars, so different filters have different filtration specs. Some may have finer specs compared to others, also pressure relief valves etc vary.

Stick with what the book says unless its a proven alternative. Its such an important piece in the cars engine system, id rather pay an extra $5 per filter than having for fork out thousands for a rebuild.
