1997 wrx help

hey my workmate is doing some work on his 1997 wrx and he said he was pulling one of the cam shaft pulleys off and it made an awefull noise. he wants to know weather or not the pulleys are keyed onto the camshaft. can anyone help me out.

plastic cams ?
or did the cam turn and hit a valve ?
yes they are keyed ( located )
I have a heap of them if your mate suffed his

hey yeh i think he said they were plastic. at work today he said he got them off without doing to much damage were just a bit on the tight side.
