ea 82 swap out
hi all, i was wondering if any one would know the exact proceedure to swap out an ea82 for an ej motor in a 1988 4wd wagon. firstly i have a gutless ea82 in it now, and wanted to know my options for engine replacements. i have heard ej motors will fit also ea82t will, but i dont have the knowledge as to what bolts straight in as is or what mods/extras i would need to get hold of for the transplant. secondly are all these motors, ej series and turbos in need of a computerised unit to run, and if so how is that hooked up into the 88 wagon with a carby motor in it. thirdly which out of the ej motors are practicle for this swap and are the ea82t motors a good choice- i also have lpg hooked up on the vehicle, or are there any good ideas to increase the output from my ea82, any help would be greatly appreciated to see if it is possible for me to do this transplant or modifications to the ea82
Hi welcome to the forum.
Best procedure to start with in this case is to use the search function. This is probably the most popular and widely discussed subject on here.
Also this thread is a good start and contains most of the basic info required.

Not to blow my own trumpet but I'm in the throws of this at the moment, it can be found here.
I will be doing a full write up once my EJ's in and running properly. I'm now taking my time to make sure everything is as it should be so I don't have to come back to it again for some time...
Just quickly though, a computer runs all the EJ motors that were Oz delivered. You will need the under dash/under bonnet wiring to match, then cut this down to just the ECU wiring, then tap the appropriate wires into the L series loom when you install it. You will need an adaptor plate to mount it to the standard L series gearbox (or do the case swap that I'm doing - I think this is much more involved though).
A high pressure fuel pump will need to be fitted - you might want to look in to fitting a surge tank too, this prevents fuel starvation to the high pressure pump. I'm fitting a larger fuel line for the fuel return.
In terms of the motor, any EJ is an upgrade over the EA motors from what I understand - they're certainly easier to work on! You will need a motor (obviously), matching engine wiring to the loom as they do change a little from model to model, the AirFlow Metre (AFM), an oxygen sensor and the exhaust extractors - the O2 sensor will be fitted to this exhaust at the Y juntion. I'm pretty sure thats all there is to it, it doesn't sound like much in writing but it is quite a bit of work when you're still trying to nut out what it is that you're doing...
Cheers
Bennie
Edit #2: You'll also need to sort a radiator to fit the larger EJ radiator hoses as well as the different angle needed on the lower outlet (90 degree like the top inlet).
