Approx cost of parts for EJ22 rebuild

Post by RedNekTJ » Sat Sep 05, 2009 8:03 pm

I have an EJ22 running in my brumby and have been thinking about either rebuilding this engine or getting another engine to rebuild and install. Anyone have a rough idea on what it would cost in parts do rebiuld an EJ22?
Also could I use the EJ22 computer and wiring loom to run an EJ25 or would I have to remove all the EJ22 gear and start fresh if I can find a well priced EJ25 halfcut

Rebuild costs vary. I was told up to $900 to recondition both heads if they need significant work (new valves etc). About $300-400 for aftermarket gaskets. No idea on bottom end parts.

Early EJ25s were quad cam, and I'm pretty sure the later ones were MAP sensed, so I wouldn't expect a SOHC MAF sensing computer like an EJ22's to run either. And the EJ25 has a longer stroke than the EJ22, so manifolds aren't interchangeable.

An rebuilt engine would set you back approx $2000 bucks
2nd hand engine with unknown condition can be vary starting from 160 bucks onwards complete from wreckers.
To rebuild your engine yourself can cost you roughly from $600-$900-$1300 depending where you shop around for parts.
I recall someone saying you cant use loom/ECU from EJ22 in EJ25 but I could be incorrect.

Cheers for the replys, will keep looking for a EJ22 and rebuild it myself with some help from mates if required. The current engine still runs fine so if it takes a while for the rebuild to get done it's no huge drama.
