Yep, that's definitely the cam position sensor. Pretty sure that bolt is the only one - give it a go and see what happens.

do you know if the earlier ej22's in the gen1's use the same cam sensor?

Might be the same sensor, but the connector is different. On the Gen 1s, the wires are fixed to the sensor, and run to a connector near the back of the engine.

is it the same plug though? could i put one in and just have extra wire sitting loose in the engine bay?
