Jumpy belt n stripped thread...!

Ok, my girl has been running fine up until yesterday....

Little bit of a story before i get to the point...

I was on my way home from work in the wet n was havin a bit of a play every time i stopped for lights n stuff, n was dumpin the clutch n gettin a bit of front wheel spin... Anyway i was turning out of an intersection with wheels spinnin then all of a sudden... cough splat beh beh beh baarr beh beh beh baarrr. So i found the best spot to pull over.. Which happened to be a nice muddy patch n went over everyting, plugs leads dizzy cap, injector plugs, fuses n just couldn't figure out why she was runnin so rough and wouldnt idle normally..

After pullin my hair out for a bit, i got on the phone to the gf and got her to come get me.. Went home grabbed all my tools n went to work on her in the rain.. lol. hooked the timing light up and it was showing ~25deg btdc, not good. Proceeded to pull both the timing covers off n found that on the RH side the belt had jumped 2 teeth and the left had jumped 1 tooth..!!!! After rollin round in the mud n carryin on i got the timing right fired her up and away she went..

The problem was that i hadn't adjusted the tensioners right and there was a heap of slack in the belt.. And it just must have jumped on me... Anyway.... I did a bit of work on her this arvo to tighten the belt via the tensioners.. Did the RH side no probs.. belt is nice and tight now. But as i was doin the LF side i stripped 1 of the bolts holding the tensioner to the motor..

Its the top bolt, ie the one it pivots off.. I thought about retappin it, but since its an 8mm dia bolt the next size up is 10mm and a 10 wont fit throung the hole in the tensioner without drillin it out.. And gettin a drill in there meens removin the radiator n fan and stuff.. Not keen.. I thought bout just forcing a modified 9mm dia bolt in it but in all my buckets of bolts n stuff they dont seem to exsist..

Anyone still awake..?? lol, Anyone got any ideas..? I just thought of something when i was half way through.. Helicoil..??

Helicoil will be the answer to retain the standard bolt size. Just make sure you put the tap in straight...

All the best!

Pretty much - the problem is the cost of the helicoil kit, it'll probabily be around the $90 mark. Just make sure you get the right style thread and depth.

You will have to drill out the old thread that's left there, just don't be drilling further than the end of the hole that's there already ;)

I dont really want to have to drill it out because i can't get a drill in there without removing a few things.. I guess i will if i hav 2... Um so say if i had a perfect 8mm dia hole and wanted to put an 8mm dia bolt in it, i can helicoil it... meaning i don't hav to drill it out to say 9mm then insert the helicoil..? ie the only drilling i would have to do is with an 8mm dia drill bit just to clean the hole..? yeah?

there is a new sort of a helicoil out now that u just tap out the next size up turn this thing in and tap the pins in and it is lock in and will not come out at all better then helicoil and u do not have to drill it at all .
all u need is a 10 mm tap and the thinge job done .
if u want the name of it i will go and see my suppler tomorrow and tell u all the name

You only need to clean out the old thread - it makes it a load easier to tap the new thread. Also give a bit of WD40 a go on the tap, it makes for a great cutting agent ;)

Things will be tight down there and I wouldn't be surprised if you'll have to remove the radiator to do the job.

Also, the helicoil kit will come with the appropriate tap - that's why its important to get the right kit...

Yeah i could think of a better hole to be in.. haha.. Ok ive done a quick fix that im pretty happy with.. The bolt that came out of it was kinda short, so i replaced it with a bolt that was bout 5-6mm longer, to my luck the hole in the block had enough good thread right at the back for it to bite in nice and tight.. Im happy with it. I think the thread was about 1.25mm pitch and since a bolt will only ever have pressure on about six threads i guess its just as good any...

Thanks boys..
