Splitting an EJ crank case
Splitting an EJ crank case
Any tips?
All the bolts are undone, I've belted around the join with a BFH, but she won't come apart.
This is my Subamarine engine, and has at least one bent rod, so who knows what else is out of place. A gudgeon pin circlip is stuck on the bent rod, so I can't get that piston out.
Trying to avoid destroying the block at this stage.
Dane.

having only had the one apart before, all I can suggest is that you check double check and triple check that there are NO bolts left in it, and make sure that pistons are out of ONE side, you will need BOTH pistons out of at least ONE side, then, possibly some gasket stripper maybe to weaken the threebond holding it together (subaru know how to STICK something together) and a sump splitter tool, yes there was a subaru special tool for this purpose, and a BFSH (big flogging softface hammer) and persist.
Not a very nice thing to get apart, and also not that nice to put back together. Cheaper (taking labour into account) to get a new short block...

Yeah I would say give it a very good look/go over the engine block, you might've missed something..
I recall something long time ago that there was a tricky bolt somewhere on the engine but i cannot tell you what engine it was...
Cheers
