Oil leak from head gasket on EA82

Post by LindsayD » Sat Feb 20, 2010 2:07 pm

I've got an oil leak from the head gasket on an EA82. I've changed the gasket but it's still leaking.

Does anybodyhave any suggestionson what can be done next?

Cheers

are you sure it is leaking from the head gasket?

it sounds pretty terminal for that head if it is

check to make sure its not the rocker cover gasket

The rocker cover gasket is pretty common to leak oil on EA82's and isn't anything you should be overly concerned about.

Mine does that every now and then too (mines only done around 120,000km)

Il replace it one day

Or the oil pump. The oil pump is good at leaking and making it look like the rear seal is the culprit - I think this is due to the air movement in the engine bay...

That is if you did the head gasket correctly - did you have the headgaskets shaved to make sure they are not buckled? I always used a rubber O ring in there and I'd often pull them out kinked. That oil guide is a pain in the arse, as is changing the head gaskets...

Its definitely the head gasket that is leaking.

Its making me think there might be a slight buckle in the head. Both surfaces were spotless when I put the new gasket in but still coming from the bottom rear corner.

It doesn't seem to leak much oil however there is plenty of oil on the under side of the sump so it got me thinking whether it was coming from somewhere else.

If it is the oil pump where would the oil be leakng from?

Usually the oil pump seal. To do it you have to take the cam belts off, then 5 bolts that hold the pump in. Clean both surfaces, replace the funny shaped seal, add a bit of silicone to the mix and reinstall it to the motor. Done.

Painful but it might solve that problem... Better than doing another set of headgaskets before ruling this out.

actually also check its not the crankshaft oil seal, if it goes it stuffs the timing belts as well.
