Hey all,

The auto to manual transfer is going well. Turns out the auto had a 3.7 rear diff, same as manual, which made life very easy.

Quick question. Going to replace the oil seals on the manual L series 5 speed 4WD Gear Box. I can see the rear seal and that seems easy enough to lever out with a screwdriver and replace. However the front seal at the clutch plate spline is posing some issues. I understand it is hidden behind the metal plate held on with three bolts. How do i remove this plate? Do i need a puller tool, or should i forget about the front seal?

Forget about the front seal unless you're going to split the box... And with an L series box it is quite painful to do unless you HAVE to.

Don't pull it as you'll snap the thing. I'll see if I can dig up a pic of what it looks like behind that plate.

^ There's a piece of tin that is used to direct oil onto the diff or something. I didn't look at it too closely but I believe that is what it does. If you pull that plate out the tin will drop into the gearbox. Then you'd have to get the plate back in with the new seal and O ring...

I'd leave it.

Bennie is right.. Is it leaky badly?
IF it's leaky on the cv hubs seals then you can replace them while the gearbox is attached but the hubs has to be unscrewed to access the seals.

Rodger that. We have already forgotten about the front seal, it doesnt leak, i thought it would be good just to do it while the gearbox is out, and easy to get to. Will replace the rear seal and be done with it! Cheers for the quick response and pics guys. Very helpful!
