Firstly hi to all ,glad to be a member ,now i have dramas with my forester .

I left my 2004 forester xt manual with my mum after i mover to wa last

year. She took it on a long drive half way across the state and on the way

back heard a loud humming noise from the gearbox .Stopped at pt. augusta and

got the raa to send it home . She was told it was most likely an input bearing

or input gear. Have any of you had or heard of this problem ? Also what is the

best solution and where to get parts Thanks in advance.

Correct diagnois is best for a start. I take it the first was by raa? Maybe nearest Subie dealer of transmission place for diagnosis. Your mum may be able to drive it to nearest?

Could quite possibly be a wheel bearing, SG9 forester + humming noise usually = W/Bearing.

Get it taken to a reputable mechanic and get then to diagnose it... Where is the car located?

On a side note try asking around the OzFoz Forum Tell em I sent ya

Oh and yes the first diagnosis was from raa in pt. Augusta. Call me paranoid , but i tend not to trust any mechanic unless they are highly recomended. Past experiences have been very expensive and caused much frustration.

I think we need more information than that, Does the noise show any speeds or specific speeds? And what gear & revs? Does the noise go away if your steering left to right like driving in an "S" line?

I'm the same with you about mechanics - I dont trust any of them no offence.

But my best beat is to take it to Steve from Raising Sun Subaru in Gepps Cross, their details from the website - http://www.risingsuncarservice.com.au/

I dont know them myself and Ive heard very good stories from them - I am very SURE they will be able to help you/your mother.
Cheers
