EA82 to E82MPFI Question

Gday,

I would like to know how much stuffing around is involved in swapping out my current ea82 with an ea82mpfi engine. Will it bolt straight on to my existing gear box and engine mounts? what has to be done with the electrics? Is it a legal modification in vic or do i need an engineers cert?

Cheers!
Mitch

need the full loom, or at least splice it in.

should fit to the gearbox, i really cant see why not.
engine mounts should be the same as the bottom end of the engine is identical.
and im pretty sure you would get away with it cause its an engine the car came out with

While everything fits in, its a big job.

You will need a whole mpfi doner car to get the entire loom, fuel tank, fuel lines, wiring from behind dash plus heaps more i have probably forgotten.

Probably easier to buy a MPFI touring wagon

The gearbox will bolt straight up.
as spike said you will need the wiring loom and either put the whole loom in or splice it,
and i'm fairly sure that you need to do something to the fuel lines.

Gearbox will mate same with engine mounts.
Bennie has done this a few times - he had MPFI then went to Carby.. yes it involves changing the loom.

my biggest thing would be the fuel tank actually.
could probably rig the electrics up ie spliced in with computer but not behind the dash and all that

yeah sounds like too much trouble for me and my skill level.

On the up side, I have found an EA82 with 130,000k on the clock. I check it out tomorrow. If it is all that it is cracked up to be I will just do a straight swap for my current(somewhat ill) engine.

Cheers for the responses guys.

You don't have to change the fuel tank - just run a larger return fuel line and fit a surge tank will do the trick.

As for the wiring, you can strip this out of a touring wagon from a parts joint pretty easily. You'll need the air intake system, Air flow meter, air filter box, the exhaust Y pipe and Oxygen sensor. Once you've got all of this you'll just have to piece it together.

I went from a carbie EA82 to an MPFI EA82 before I found this forum and found out about the EJ conversion. There was no issues with Vic roads in the engine conversion. The EJ is a whole new story :( Also the EJ is a little more work for a whole lot more gain. You'll find the EA82 MPFI smoother a little more responsive and should return better fuel economy than the carb'd version.

If you're after simple and reliable go with the replacement carb'd EA.

Cheers

Bennie
