diff winding?or tailshaft? :S

i had my outback out in the mud last night and i got bogged so my mate pulled me out with his 4x4 and on the way home wen i got out on the road about 2 mins into the drive home i heard a weird noise from the rear of the car sounds like the diff winding or something like that could i have stuffed the diff from getting bogged and being pulled out?the noise is only there wen i back off the power like if i am in a gear and hit the accelerator it goes away but as soon as i back off it makes the noise can someone tell me wat it could be cheers.....

sounds like u got some rocks in the dices in the back wheels

have a look at the rims that there could be mud sitting there causing off balance, if not check the drive shaft as something might've wounded on it then tail shaft - if normal then there is something wrong... advise us..

Ummm.. hate to say this but I think that when you got bogged in the mud, the diff instantly became cold and has drawn moisture inside it via the breather cap

I would get the car on a hoist (or all 4 wheels off the ground) and check it in drive. I also even if not the diff.. would change the oil to be safe

hey guys i should have checked it out before i asked the question i feel like an idiot now i looked at it,all the problem was,was the heat shroud for the exhaust was bent and moulded around the tailshaft causing it to rub and make the weird winding/grind sound but all fixed now lol.....

yeh i no if i didn find this site i would have just taken it to a mechanic telling them the diff is winding and they would have charged me an arm and a leg and said they changed the diff but reallly just fixed the heat shield (2 second job)cheers guys
