EA82 Low Compression

Post by 2Grumpy » Fri Aug 20, 2010 7:30 am

hi

my 1800cc motor compression measures 30/35/60/150 psi.

It's not burning oil so I am assuming a top end problem.

can the heads be removed without removing the motor?

thanks

As far as I know the heads can be removed without pulling the engine.

But lots say pulling the engine makes it a lot easier

If they are in their usual body - the L series, the answer is yes. weigh up removal is easier to do the job versus bending over, possibly dropping rockers off as you pull apart or reassemble getting dropped bits dirty etc

+1 for pulling the engine.. as long as you have the equipment available to you

with stuffed compression rings don't always burn oil do you, may have good oil rings, stuffed comp rings to get this, gunked up rings. Did you also do wet test by adding oil to pots for next comp test? Not best result with boxer engine though as oil not seep to sides and seal....

No I didn't bother I didn't think a bit of oil would change much with such low pressure.

I get your point about the rings.

Sounds like I better do a leakdown test before I decide what to do.

Are the motors easy to pull out ie 1 or 2 hours?

Thanks

The engine can be out in 30 minutes if you have done it before and have all the gear.

Yep, phizinza has done it so many times I am pretty sure he said he can do a complete EA82 engine swap in just over an hour.

I have got the complex EA82T and all its heatshields out in 1hr 45 minutes. It is the meticulous reassembly and clean up of the rocker boxes gasket goo grooves that are the real slow time consumer. I have found pressure pack export? degreaser from surep cheap to be excellent to soak the silicone sealant bits in to lose its grip on the metal bits
