My subie had 250 000 on it when I got it, only done another 5000 more now.
Im not sure about the condition of the timing belts.
Can you tell by looking at them ?
If a belt breaks, does it damage the engine ?

Visual inspection can be done by removing the outer timing covers and inspecting the belts look for wear cracks in the belts, missing teeth etc.
if you have never done a set of timing belts since you have owned the vehicle I wouldn't wait until you were trapped somewhere by a broken belt. might pay to do the water pump, tensioners and pulleys as well.
finally the EA82 is a non interference motor so you won't have problems (apart from it not running) if you break a belt.

you'll feel better in your travels knowing you have replaced belts and tensioners....

thanks guys.
Ive never done timing belts on a subaru but did one on an 02 Lancer recently.
At least with the subaru it looks to have better access.

Yeah its annoying when you're 500kms from home after doing a 10 000km trip and a tensioner bearing explodes. On the upside you might meet some great RAC larakins who take you to a caravan park via a winery
Its a pretty easy task to complete overall. Good luck mate.
