"Talking" gear stick - anyone know why?

G'day all,
My gear stick is now "talking" at times. This has only just started while towing a trailer and could be heard with the stereo low at any speed if there was a load on the engine, light or heavy the noise is the same.
Its hard to describe but it sounds a bit like a straight cut gearset through the gear stick, but only in 2nd and 4th - it has been heard in 3rd and 5th on occasion too but this isn't as audible as 2nd and 4th.
After driving without the trailer I can't remember hearing the noise but I did have the stereo up and the window down as I enjoyed some actual acceleration
If anyone can shed some light on this I'll be keen to know what it is - and hoping that it is not a bearing on the way out...

Are all the bushes in the shitter (sorry SHIFTER) linkages good? This hasnt occured somehow in relation to the prob with vibration from driveline?

Shifter linkages are good. If you hold the gear stick you can't hear it anymore. I first heard it after taking the console out to clean it up so the floor lining can go back in (looks good) and it sounded like it was coming from the 4wd selector, resting my hand on it made it go away, pretty much the same as the gear selector does now.
I think the two could be linked (vibrations) but as to why it only occurs primarily in 2nd and 4th is beyond me!

Mabey you should just lay off on a couple of the drinks there mate, they starting to get to ya head. Haha just joking:). But seriously now, I might hav the same problem only slightly though I'll listen closely next time i'm in the car.

Bennie.. this happens to many lifted Subies

it's nothing serious, it's just the angle the linkages are now at. It's there all the time even in non lifted Subies but just more pronouned after being put on more of an angle unless it's really bad then it's usually something touching/rubbing. Can you see if there is any wear marks on things.. like the tailshaft, body panel, etc??

Driving it today I noted that I can't hear the noise - any speed any acceleration load etc its just not there so I'm putting it down to the extra load of towing a trailer... Not worried about this anymore so I guess this thread is now redundant!

I've just come across this thread after doing a search for something else, I thought it'd be good to finish it off with what I've discovered.
I've found out through a truck driving course that it's due to the forks on the selector rings wearing then vibrating in their slot on the selector ring - this then sends a "chatter" noise up through the gearstick.
The cause of this is driving with your hand on the gearstick or as they call them in the industry - being a "knob jockey". Since learning this I've been changing my driving habits in terms of where my hands are when driving - trying to keep both on the wheel...
Interestingly since the rebuild I've not heard this noise. I don't know if it's the oil that I've put in the gearbox (top up) or if it's due to fixing some stuff on the linkages or some extra stress on the linkages that wasn't there before... I'm not bothered anyway.
