Perhaps Taza needs to look at the centre diff locking mechanisim that the vortex boxes came with?

yes yes yes I know it isn't a rear diff :) it may give him another path to follow

the whole section of the FSM can be found here downloads.php?do=file&id=123

Thanks TOONGA, that's really helpful. I should try and make a centre diff lock. I'm not currently sure how the centre diff works in our AWD Subies.

With the rear locker I have completed my design and am pretty much ready to get one made. It's just $$$ and time now to do so, then the testing can being :D

Bugger "testing" - I'll take three, one for me, one for venom and one for Dulagarl. We'll let you know how they go

Seriously though, I can't shell out for three at the moment :(

I did actually finish designing it and had started making pieces on the lathe at work.
Really though I don't see the point in a Subaru. Good front and rear limited slip diffs do an excellent job in a Subie. Anymore and the rest of the car just isn't going to hold up to the task....

If you had ever been in a suby with a locking center and locking rear diff you wouldnt think that way. unstoppable..

IMO a rear locker would mean needing less momentum so easier on the car. Also, the harshest thing for a CV is lots of wheelspin in the air then come down hard on solid ground. Great way to snap a shaft or CV! A locker would prevent the wheelspin of the lifted wheel ;)

Taza, do you think your design would work? There's lots of people, myself included, who would give their left testicle for a rear locker!

Clearly you don't have the real terrain where a locked rear end comes into it's own! Trust me, a subi and lock rear = win

Totally agree!!

Yep - every 'yota or "real" 4x4 owner with IFS will tell you the same thing, except in these IFS units they shatter the crown or pinion wheel - because they're actually running in reverse all the time!

For me - ONLY if it's a manual locker. I want to decide when I need the rear to be locked ;)

If you didn't already know - there was already an FB post ages ago on one of the Subaru group pages, asking to put expressions of interest to this website: http://www.caplocker.com/

Which I did, didn't think much would come of it. Since then though I received an email from them (around January) I think it said they had enough expressions of interest to make it viable and were looking at sample diffs to get the design. Also asking who would be comfortable paying a deposit so they could get the manufacturing going. I haven't seen or heard anything beyond that since then, and in typical FB group fashion I can't find any record of any of this  This is why forums are so much better. You'll just have to trust me  Also the deposit was something like $1k and finished cost close to $3k  But then this is no easy thing they're trying to do, with the kind of work that goes into a project like this I think that is reasonable.

I'd like to track down an R180 locker and fit that. A little bit heavier but nothing like another idea I had!

I doubt I'd be buying something new like that cap locker. Cool that it's happening or has the potential. If I ever get a newer Subaru I might consider it.

As far as I know the project you mentioned Sam fell on its arse, the company has no longer any interest in it as the guy who was working on it left / split with them ... ( not sure on all the details )

Just did some sketching for the new diff, will post it here later ... :)

See here : downloads.php?do=file&id=159&act=down

I gotta say, I take my hat off to you and your ability to draw such accurate drawings like that.

So what's the game plan from here?
