Post by H-top » Sat Jun 04, 2011 10:51 am

G'day,a

I want to remove the factory oil cooler on my EJ20 Turbo.
can it be done? will i have to loop the water lines or can i
block them off?

Im going to fit an aftermarket cooler.

Cheers,

You need an N/A;
* oil filter bolt/banjo/union jiggera - what the oil filter screws on to, which is screwed into the block.
* the plug and washer for the block - for the coolant passage, it takes a pretty decent size allen key.
* a thermostat housing without the extra fittings - might be easier to block/plug these., as different housing face different ways etc.

Find a stuffed N/A engine and get the parts, new they are way too dear.

Wow.... I doubt an ea82 plug would fit?
It's a 14 or a 17 from memory.

Maybe TIG the housing closed? The port that is?

I really would not bother. The factory oil cooler is neat and simple and does a great job of cooling the oil.

No idea about EA81/82 stuff, never dabbled with them.

I wouldn't TIG it closed either...

Just looked into it, and the parts are;
Oil Filter Union - 15018AA050 and RRP is $9
Plug for block - 11021AA120 and RRP $25.20
Thermostat housing* - 11060AA071 and RRP is $40.75

* Off an EJ251, hangs down the bottom of the pump and points almost straight to the left - as opposed to the turbo one that bolt's on the front - so no idea if it would actually bolt on a point the right way.

I had it the wrong way round too - if you want the oil filter union to suit an oil cooler, that is like $80 on it's own.

I used to have an oil cooler/warmer on my N/A EJ251 but took it off as it sat maybe 1mm from the headers (Borla rep's) - it's not hard, bit of a PITA to get the different model's parts/hoses to line up thou.

Going to use a sandwich plate type set-up? Then you might still need to use your Oil Filter Union for the length.
Try a search on NASIOC and RS25.com too.
