Timing light not always firing

Post by apg39 » Sat Nov 19, 2011 11:49 pm

Adjusted my timing today on the L series, first time using one but went fine ... Except noticed the light did not flash every time...probably once every few seconds it wouldnt flash.

Wondering if this means I might not be getting a spark consistently or if its down to the timing light? All appeared to be hooked up correctly so not sure.

I guess I could put the pickup on other spark plug wires & see if there are any missed flashes?
Cheers,
Andrew

Most timing lights use an Inductive Pickup and this sometimes doesn't work 100% of the time but for timing purposes it doesn't matter, as long as the car doesn't feel like it's missing whilst doing it, otherwise you have a different issue.

check the connections to the alligator clamps that go to the battery as well. mine had the same problem then stopped working all together. Turns out you need power to make the light work and one of the connections had come away. the plastic coating was fine but the wire had broken.
