auto box problem

Hi guys - I have a problem with my L series auto 3 speed - 3rd gear has gone (slipping) - the other gears work ok - will not change up from 1st in D - will change into second from 1st manually and if I change manually from 2nd to D it slips - tried adjusting the band with no luck - could it be the governor ? any advice would be greatly appreciated - cheers

With any auto trans issues ALWAYS check the fluid level when hot first with rngine at idle. With the VW auto a little over full helps. When was the fluid changed last?
You'll lose gears if the fluid is old or low sometimes going up a steep grade slowly.
But what would I know? I dont own a Subie auto. But this is across the range of cars.

Biggest problem I find with the 3 speed autos from the EA range is the vacuum modulator. Try to see it the hose coming off the manifold (and going down to the box) will hold vacuum. I'd also make sure the fluid level is correct.. like Tweety said, have the engine running and gearbox in neutral or park, then check using the hot or cold level marks depending on the box temp.
