After much time trying and some broken (3/4" drive stuff) & twisted (extensions and 3/4" to 1/2" reducer) tools it's become apparent that the fill plug on the rear diff of our 2007 Outback is never, ever coming out.

So, can you replace the rear cover without completely removing the diff from the vehicle? It's clearly have to be dropped down a bit but how much play can you get by dropping the tailshaft and hanger bolts etc.?

And secondly, anyone have a sparey lying around? ;)

You need a special adapter, 13.5mm i think. A half inch drive socket will only damage it

I've been changing Subaru diff oils for years and a standard 1/2" drive breaker bar is usually all you need. It's actually a 13mm square drive hole, but sadly that'll make no difference, we can't generate enough torque to undo it without breaking stuff. The 13mm square drive tool isn't easily sourced in Australia.

Weld a long lump of steel to it and it'll come out, I had to do the same with my Landcruiser.
