How much is the diff backlash?

Post by Smarti » Thu May 24, 2012 12:19 pm

Hi there
I bought a 99 Outback with 200k and I'm wondering now,
how I can check the backlash frrom the front and back diff and
how much is normal, under 1 cm? (because it's a warranty work maybe)
Can I check the axial-backlash when rotating tire?

Thanks for you info
Mario

Welcome to the forum Mario.

I'm not exactly sure what you need and why. The back lash is set when the diffs are put in. This should not change enough to worry about. Unless you've fiddled with the diffs you won't need to have it checked.

And to have the front diff checked you need to pull the gearbox and split it.

Cheers

Hi Bennie
thanks for your fast answer about my request.
So, I give you further explanation to my question (sorry, I'm unversed in forums )
The car is pulling to right and left when I drive ahead and the road is uneven, and according other cars it's extremely. However I mean it's coming from the front diff or the shaft drives and I hope to check the axle-backlash only with rotating the tires to see it's ok or not.
Thanks

Mario
