EA81 auto choke - anyone know how to fix?

G'day EA81 buffs!

I've got an issue with Sunnie the Brumby's auto choke - namely it's never worked. The element spring part has never sat in it's proper position since we got it. Someone had pop riveted it in with the retainer bracket.

I tried to place it back where it needed to be but it didn't work - it probably didn't help that I was rushed and used cable ties! Here's a pic:

It's been like this for so long that the bottom part of the element's case has a deep groove worn in it so the bracket no longer holds it properly. I've been thinking of using some tape to make it jam in as it should.

Anyone else got any thoughts on how to put this back together and get it working again for the long run?

I did find a replacement carb a week and a bit ago at a local wreckers, looked like it was in really good condition but I just couldn't afford it. Went back yesterday and it's already sold :( So now I've got to fix this one!

Cheers

Pop rivets are factory.
I fixed one earlier this year but had to raid another carb for parts.
Bennie I can't remember much but when i put it back togeter I tapped the holes out 3/16W and used screw instead of pop rivets.
It did take me a few goes at getting it right and needed the other carb choke mechanism for reference paying special attention when i pulled it apart.

Does that outer bell fall out of its housing, if so the bell is RS, this is exactly what was wrong with mine.

another one of those add ons that added to the add ons....more vacuum tubes and sols and springs and and and

A simple lever would have sufficed as it did in the 60's.

Me....grumpy old guy.

That's what I found when I looked at the other carb that I missed out on. I couldn't believe it!

Yeah but these days you end up driving around with the lever still pulled out! I just want the auto choke so that it'll start first time in the cold rather having to "coax" it to start - which is painful and takes some time!
