fabled death rattle..

i have a suspicion i may just have spun a bearing..... gave it a bit of stick bit of a crunch and puff of smoke now a nice grinding sound coming from the block... think i may have run out of patience with the car to pull it down to pieces and rebuild if it turns out to be necessary...

video kind of illustrates the noise..

hard to tell from the video but it didn't sound like a bottom end knock, more like a failed harmonic balancer or the timing belt tensioner.

had another look of her a little more properly today, definate "grinding" coming from around the front crank shaft pulley rather then a knock maybe even more central to the block, which makes me a little suspicious but i'll swap out the harmonic balancer first to check that, luckily i'm on uni holiday with lots of time to play around with it.. long term plan is abit of a build so if harmonic balancer isn't the cause, the engine build may start early...

I too am thinking front end noise and not bottom end knock. I could come over and check for you?

Great. Something not too expensive, just make sure you buy the turbo one and not the one to match your VIN.

How could I refuse such a good offer, although I'm not a beer drinker :(

It's probably worth doing the timing belt etc while you're there. I'd hazard a guess the last time it was changed was when I first did it when I converted my wagon?

yeh i have a new gearbox here so i think i might just pull the engine out aswell as the rocker covers are leaking abit and i may aswell do timing belts, did you replace the tensioner i may aswell change that aswell if not

Have a look once it's out. If not leaking or feels soft, then reuse.
