No dash lights and engine does

Post by Joshamc » Sat Oct 13, 2012 11:35 am

Hey I'm new so bare with me. I changed my engine in my 89 brumby. I put in an ea 81 same engine from a wagon. Hooked it all up but I have no dash lights and the car starts but as soon as I release the key off start it dies. I've checked the wiring but can't find anything. Any ideas?

this sounds like the ignition fuse is blown, Im hoping you know where the fuses are :) if not below the steering wheel on the right hand side, look for the ignition fuse.

If you replace it and it blows again, then you have a positive short somewhere on the engine.

Yeah I've checked the fuse no luck. There's no power to the engine fuse I've just realized too.

Check the ignition switch. Sounds like you're getting power to that fuse while in the start position but not when in the on position.

Could be time for a new ignition switch if it doesn't check out correctly.

you need to find power at coil pos with IGN on position, just before starter motor position. You can cheat for a moment with wire from battery pos to coil pos WITH FUSE in between just in case it blows. Is engine block earthed to body ?

Hey thanks all for advice. Turns out it was the ignition barrell. Swapped it over with one I had laying around and works fine.

Proof of coincidence ? I also changed my ignition switch over thinking I deserved pat on shoulder - got a bite on the arse instead at night in frozen conditions - fusible link in my case was real cause but swap ign over gave immediate improvement before???
