swap a tranny?

Hi,

Doing some work on the wagon during my time off, and I plan on changing my transmission. Currently got a 3AT in it which works fine, but I much prefer manuals, and I would like to take advantage of a dual range setup. So here comes my question.

Looks like Im going to pick up a 80's sedan with D/R 4wd with a stuffed motor for next to nothing. As my wagon is an MY, with the ea81 and the sedan is an L-series with an EA82, am I going to be able to use the clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing with the EA81 or do I need some gear from an 81 tranny? Done a fair bit of reading on USMB and here so I roughly know what else is in store but was mainly conserned Id need to hunt down other parts from another car.

My other thoughts were along the lines of buying a wrecking brumby and stealing its D/R 4 spd, which should all bolt straight up. I mainly drive in the city so overdrive isnt really a big selling point for me.

Can anyone shed some light on the whole clutch/pressure plate/flywheel question for me?

I am just wrecking a brumby now - you can have everything you need out of it for $100 delivered to your door - as long as you can wait until I come down to Perth next which should be within 4-6 weeks but might even be before Xmas.

Yep, Il take it! Not in a huge rush for it but I do have time off, maybe not next week but the week after. Would it be easier for you if I were to drive up then?

Um ... Great news, but the video is crap. You can't see nothin on it as it's all washed out ... :(

Hmm, I shot it with my phone which isnt the greatest, but I can still see it?? Just shows the gearbox in the car and me driving it forward about 2ft to show its working.

yeah someone before me did a respray.

Now I got some crappy electrical bug. Brake light fuse keeps popping. Idea's?

Possible a short at the brake pedal switch?

Do you have a spare one off the auto pedal box?

Nah if only it was that simple. Fries with the switch unplugged. Direct short somewhere.

Yeah I have a trailer plug. This used to work. Must have bunged something when I pulled out the steering collum.

You must have crimped a wire when putting the column back in. Just drop it down a touch and riggle the wiring around a bit

Got brake lights back. Off of the connector that goes to the brake pedal switch was a third wire (black with white stripe. This wire was a direct short to ground. Just snipped it. Will see what doesnt work and fix it then.

Pretty sure Black with white trace is Ignition feed +ve

Yeah it is, from what the fuse box says that fuse is for both the stop lights and the room lights. Id say that black and white wire was supplying power to the lights in the car roof. Too bad, they didnt work all that well anyway. This car has the most messy, crappy, add this, add that, wiring I have ever seen. Everytime I have to do something under there its a headache.

Good news is I just took the car for a blat with the new tranny. Everything works as expected. Gates feel good and it still goes into reverse :D. now just to finish up the 4wd selector and its ready for some bush.

Few things I noticed. My auto speedo cable reaches the man one fine, so why do people swap them? Diff ratio is different. Must be a 3.7 in the man and a 3.9 in the auto. The EA81 actually develops some power.

Yeah, great to hear the car is driving again :)

The auto speedo cable is longer and people change to the auto when they fit a lift kit in, as the mechanical stays in place but the body is lifted up.
