Diff Pinion shaft - how to get the nut off.

G'day,

I'm trying to replace my rear diff pinion shaft's oil seal. I've got the seal, got the 27mm socket to fit the nut but cannot get the nut undone.

Is there a trick to this that I'm missing? I've got my breaker bar on it then using a jack apply pressure by jacking it up, but I run out of available room to jack with before the bar is on the body work.

I need to get this done by tomorrow night for the cruise this Saturday. I've also got the diff in the car as I thought the wheels could do the holding of the diff stubs...

Cheers

Bennie

Have you tried a rattle gun yet? That's how I always do it. Failing that, what you're describing is what I'd be trying, need to get the car higher off the ground somehow I guess.

I don't have a rattle gun :( And if I get the car higher off the ground how do I stop the wheels from turning? I guess I could drop the wheels on to some bricks to get the extra height but that's still not really going to help with the leverage thing.

I might have to see if a mate's got a rattle gun I can use.

I have one but that's probably no good to you at this point. As a last resort I could help ya out to do it at my place Friday. If ya get that stuck it would be no worries for me.

Doing this whilst still in the car and off the ground is very risky but I would put the whole car up on stands (try getting the rear as high as possible) and then put in 4WD and lock in gear with the handbrake on.

Oh and I'd use a rattle gun, if not a slogging spanner

I have thought of a somewhat risky method too. Put the socket on the nut using a breaker bar, then with the car on the ground carefully push it in the direction needed till the breaker bar is against the body & cracks the nut loose. Just might do the job if ya stuck.

Ok it's sorted.

Asked a mate and we went to his kitted out workshop (wet pants type of workshop!). On the hoist, rattle gun used, nylon hammer and the pinion flange was off within 5 minutes!

So what you need, rattle gun, 27 mm socket, new seal - I used Kelpro 97159, common to the R160 diff.

Now I need to change the oil tomorrow, turns out it's a lovely grey colour :( Dunno when that happened

And another turn in this thing that's now turning into a saga.

Stupid question but here goes anyway: can the second piece of the tail shaft be put in backwards?

I have a vibration that really feels like an off balanced tail shaft at speed - it comes and goes. The tail shaft looked identical at both ends so I guessed which way it goes in. Being that I'm Bennie I didn't mark anything as usual.

If it can be put in backwards then I have another issue to track down. Coincidence that it happens straight off the back of replacing the pinion shaft seal - I think so! When driving home after replacing the seal there was no vibration - there also was no tail shaft in the car...

Thoughts?

Cheers

I would have a guess that it didn't go back in to the original spot but if you remove the bolts from both end, then turn one end until some dirt, grease or some sort of colouring lines up then put the bolts back in. If this doesn't work, turn it around and do the same.
