Piston removal EA81?

Post by dwayneb » Thu May 18, 2006 8:18 pm

I have an EA81, that I purchased off 85RX turbo (Bryan). I was told that it was blowing smoke, so before it goes into the Brumby, thought I would break it down, do the rings, and anyting else that needs replacing/renewing. So far it hasn't needed too much, but stumped how to do the rings, either in the block still or on the bench. Any help for thos noob when it comed to motors would be appreciated. :?:

Next stage for the Brumby is this EA81, with mild cam (unsure of specs), with a Weber, also purchased from Bryan.

a gregorys manual would be useful...but to start you off

these pistons are like two strokes in that they have circlips at each end of gudgeon pin. you need to remove the outer clip on each piston through each access hole...back two are just holes when you remove bell housing, the front two are plugs with 14mm hex in them. lhs behind water pump , rhs visible to outside world , from memory. once you get circlips out the pins might just come out with pliers, might not either. M6 threaded rod with a nut and washer on one end a bit of fuel hose over the thread that fits inside pin, nut washer other end. slide it in and tighten nut down to expand inside pin gripping it you hope and pull. I have had to use and expensive seal puller to get them out with huge force behind it - slide hammer !! good luck !!

Thanks for the info. I have passed it on to the person doing the wrenching for me. He has worked on VW's before, but the subarus are slightly different. Anything else i should look at changing/renewing while its out. The motor has about 220,000km's, at the last oil change in 98.
