LSD L series
Was there ever a LSD fitted to a L series as rear diff option ?

Don't think so...El_Freddo wrote:This rings true with me too. The 4wd Vortex XT would have an LSD as well.

There were also two versions of the AWD Turbo Vortices too , one auto, one manual.
Thinking of L Series RX, was the LSD an option or the norm ? The auto version of the RX - the GLTA did not have fitted as standard anyway
LSD was standard on the RX Turbo with the manual only. As you have noted steptoe, the automatic turbo did not have an LSD diff. I suppose Subaru felt the 'automatic' 4wd system would suffice for the auto. Ahhh... Remember the tag line? Subaru - from the land where tomorrow has already arrived!
No idea about the Vortex...

Interesting. I always thought the AWD vortexes came with a rear LSD standard - every one I've seen at the parts yards that have been AWD always have the rear diff missing as well, hence why I thought it was an LSD. 3.7 ratio diffs are too common to grab one with the gearbox in my eyes...TOONGA wrote:Mine doesn't either ...
nor a front LSD...
I do have the mythical diff lock though

I do know when I use my diff lock I get extra bind front and back, but after researching a little it seems the vortex LSD was a factory option
this page while rather old is very interesting.
even the wikapedia XT article doesn't say anything about the vortex getting an LSD
I was looking at diffs from other vehicles at the wrecker the other day and with a bit of trickery and magic I think I know of one in the 3.7 range that could be shoehorned into a brumby. However it would need modified CV shafts and fabricated diff housing. Mind you it would open up a whole avenue of lockers and LSD centres for the diff

So If I'm running a ea82 engine, (not interested in engine swaps) with 14 inch rims a good all round ratio would be 3.9 to compensate and drive the underpowered ea82?
I have obtained a rx rear end with LSD and disc's....I am assuming its a LSD at the moment until I get to have a good look at it, it is missing sticker on the housing

The rim size has nothing to do with gearing, the tyre diametre is what changes your gearing.pzs wrote:So If I'm running a ea82 engine, (not interested in engine swaps) with 14 inch rims a good all round ratio would be 3.9 to compensate and drive the underpowered ea82?
I've had a 14 inch rim with the stock 23 inch diametre tyre size, and I've got a 14 inch rim with 27 inch tyre diametre. So I guess it's more about the tyre size you want to be running.
But 3.9 would be better with larger tyres over the 3.7 diff ratio

Lucky fella. I hope the rear diff is an LSDpzs wrote:I have obtained a rx rear end with LSD and disc's....I am assuming its a LSD at the moment until I get to have a good look at it, it is missing sticker on the housing

Just grab the rear diff out of the same car you get the 3.9 ratio gearbox from. If you've only got the box they can be found in the l series, although harder to find these days, or the early liberty, again, some searching needed.
Get the gearbox first as these are harder to find than a rear diff of the required ratio IMO.

I was under the impression we're talking about an L series here - correct?pzs wrote:Early liberty...thanks I'll have a look around town and see if I can grab some out of a wreck.
I assume after all the reading I have done, it would be a straight crown wheel swap in front and rear diffs?.
I would split my new LSD and my original gearbox as it only has 130000km on it.
I only ask as the L series gearbox can't have the pinion shaft swapped out like the EJ AWD gearboxes can. Unless you're going to use an EJ gearbox in the L series, if that is the subi you have that we're discussing...
