It may have just been a coincidence that it happened just after 4WDing, but could have also got some sand/dirt/mud/water up behind the flywheel. I'd just wash it down with some degreaser and watch it over the next couple of days. Also check all the fluid levels and oil colours to be on the safe side.
You know you are getting old when the candles on your birthday cake start to cost more than the cake itself.
