I am in the position of rebuilding the EJ22 in our VW Bus, and I would like to put some better cams in it if possible, taking into account that I would like better torque over a wider range, and fuel economy is not a problem.

If higher compression ratio will add a bit extra power, I am prepared to do that as well. Any thoughts on the compression ratio, machining required, and fuel required, I am interested.

Basically if I can get the stock EJ22 with about 130HP up another 20 or soHP then I will be happy

Would love to see a pic of your bus. My gf just sold her Beetle, took her ages to restore it from bare metal. She was sorry to see it go but she couldnt afford 2 cars

I'm sure there are better torque cams available - I'd speak with a mob that makes cams for a living such as Crow or Wayne cams (I think). There's bound to be someone around in Vic that will have a set of replacement cams or a cam grind they can do.

I know in the US there's Delta cams that have a cam profile for better torque, it's often referred to on the USMB as "delta cam" when listed in the mods of the engine. Who knows, they might be here too.

Either way, what ever you find in the cams department let me know as I'd be interested to hear what you've found/experienced if you get a new cam profile.

Further to the above, you should be able to build a high compression EJ22. I don't know what parts do the job but I'm sure someone will know.

Also you could build a stroked EJ22 with the use of the crank (and I believe rods) from an EJ25. This effectively makes it an EJ23 from memory. I've not done this, just read about it. You'd want to use 98 RON fuel with an engine setup like this.

I am getting the engine rebuilt with 0.5 rebore. The cams will be standard, and so will the rest. I am going to get it all up and running stock EJ22.

Then I will try a small US spec turbo that will give a modest 20% 'ish power upgrade. If it doesnt work out, I will go back to stock.

Why not go with a supercharger setup. It's been done before and with a fresh engine it would work very well.

Best bit is that if you get an electronic clutch you can decide when you want to use it or have it kick in automatically at a certain throttle position
