EJ passenger Head Plug question

Post by El_Freddo » Fri Jan 17, 2014 6:10 pm

G'day,

This plug same as on my EJ:

Image

Is weeping quite a bit of oil. How do I seal it up?

The subaru manual says not to touch it unless it's really necessary. It doesn't give any details about how to remove it etc. I don't want to pull the cam out either.

But since I've got the engine out it would be best to tackle this now.

The above pic is not mine, I've stolen it from somewhere else as I've been lazy with the photographs of my unit.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Bennie

Thanks Andy.

I'll have a go at cleaning it up and sealing it. I just want to get it going - leak free and ASAP.

I'll keep that part in mind ;)

Cheers

Never replaced one of those, but spoke a mate who's done heaps.
They are pain to get out, must be carefull not to scratch the alloy around it.
Either clean and seal it or put a new one in as they are press fit, generally hard to re-use a removed one..
L serious, still.

All I did was clean up the oil and dirt, cleaned up with metho then applied some fresh silicon. Dunno if it will work long term but it's worth a go...

I have changed a few and would recommend you buy a new one off Andy ($11 is worth it).

To remove the old one is easy, just stick a flat blade screwdriver in the centre (keep away from the edge) and punch the driver through, then just twist and lever out. I also clean up the head with thinners/turps and then put threebond on the cover, then just knock it in with a large socket.
You know you are getting old when the candles on your birthday cake start to cost more than the cake itself.

as in you didn't remove the plug first?

just order a new one and replace it. easy to do with the car slightly raised.

problem with cars / engines this old is every seal / pipe eventually fails. i have replaced just about all the rubber in mine.

Well the engine is back in without having sorted this plate with anything more than some turps and a thick smear of silicone - yeah yeah I know...

I had thoughts that this plate would need to be pulled out from the cam side of the housing, meaning the cams would need to have been removed...

Cheers
