Just quick request for a bit of in put. I have an ae81 with a 5 speed box and it has just started making some tapping/clicking noises... I have ruled out the cv joints as its not making any noise when turning and they appear to be in good shape. It will only start making the noise if I start driving a bit harder eg to overtake or go up a hill. it also dose not seem to be coming from the motor, it will rev freely in neutral and no odd noise... it sounds like a cv but only happens in a straight line as Im doing 60 - 90kmh and I put my foot down. any ideas people? Im starting to think its coming from the gearbox..

You can never rule out the inner CV's on these things; I put 4 different brand new complete axles in mine of different brands/prices and they all made horrible grinding, clicking, grating noises from the first drive. Also went through 4 gearboxes and different hubs trying to eliminate the noise, got sick of the spend so now I just turn the radio up and ignore it *Edit* Oh didn't mean to scare you by the way

How old are the CV's? if it's a 4WD 5 speed it would have to be a later L series g/box conversion, can't remember if you use normal Brumby shafts or L series ones in the conversion.

It should use the stock drive shafts unless you've sourced an MPFI gearbox as the output stubs are larger on these.

Carb EA82 5spd gearbox = 23 spline (same as MY)
MPFI EA82 5spd gearbox = 25 spline



I'd be checking out your engine/gearbox mounts, pitch stay rod and generally anything else that can be loose. I'd also look into the drive shafts as Silverbullet has suggest - particularly if they've been swapped from one side to another.

Given the scenarios the noise appears,.... straight line, under load situations of 60-90 kph, overtaking and going up hill, I would
certainly look at it being 'pinging' (pre detonation) coming from the motor. You wont get it to make the noise just by static revving as it has to be under load.
Usually caused by some sort of fuel or timing problem.
(Whatever you do, don't ask silverbullet about this issue, he has just come out of therapy from the problems he's had with his car )

I think I found the Issue.. a bad batch of fuel or the fact I filled it up to the top for the first time in months.. it was not firing and missing (never heard a boxer missing like that before :/ ) now the new plan is to redo the tappets as they have started rattling terribly now, new plugs and leads. I swapped out the plugs with an old set as they were all gummed up and had heaps of rubbish on them, the timing was also out a little, but its running better for now. Thanks for the help peeps
