How much play in rear CV's is normal ?

Post by chinski » Thu Mar 27, 2014 10:09 am

Chasing vibrations (suspect tailshaft ) in my Brumby with 92 RS Liberty rear diff the Driveline specialist shop found the rear R/H inner CV moves on the Diff spline a fair bit, now i've found this before & freaked out, took it to a Subaru shop who said it was normal, the outer does the same just not as much movement.

So Subaru shop said normal, Driveline shop said it's terrible & needs replacing.

I pulled it apart for a look myself, when assembled it feels like the roll pins are the only piece holding it together, once shaft is pulled & putting CV back onto Diff shaft there is definite play in the splines, but they do mesh together but not like any spline i've ever felt.

Feels like drive is transmitted through the splines although there is movement there, & roll pin just stop it coming off like a normal splines circlip would.

So how much play is to much between these splines, with CV fitted & grabbing the whole CV it moves maybe 5mm vertically ?

I had the same play on my front left inner CV on my 82 hardtop when I was chasing vibration lately, I changed it with a new one and it still had the play and vibration. I changed both front wheel bearings but still didn't fix it.
I finally found the problem was one of my front wheels was out of balance or buckled by trying on a different set of wheels and the problem went.
