How is this done, do both halves need to be bolted together, or can the blocks be test in halves? I am looking at taking the the block to be honed and tested with the heads, next time I go to Adelaide

If it was a steel block you would magnaflux it...

but as we have aluminium blocks in subarus they would use dye penetrant inspection

Never seen any Subaru blocks crack, so doubt you really need to worry about it. Even on the most heavily used rally cars the only issues with the blocks is the separation on bore sleeve. As long as the block is clean and oil free, then I'd just use a can of white DyMark Flawchek near the top of the bore.
