Iridium plugs into EA81 or not

Post by Cliff R » Sat Mar 07, 2015 1:45 pm

Thinking of trying Iridium plugs into the bog standard EA81.
I know there are a lot of past threads on the forum regarding these plugs but I am wondering if anyone has any recent experiences with the Iridium plugs into the EA81.
Also, is it (from past threads) still advisable to stick with 1.1mm on the gaps for the Iridium plug ?
If no consensus can be reached I will stick with the standard PB6ES NGK plugs.

Whatever gap you get with iridiums stays don't it ?

five bucks for an NGK V's $25 for an iridium - my wallet would not come out its hidey hole if I even looked at iridiums !

Try BCP's the C comes in the smaller 5/8" hex on the plug - like old Holden spark plugs

Steptoe
Yes Iridium plugs are expensive even off ebay.
I just seem to recall my wifes first KIA Carnival (2000 model) had Iridium plugs as it was claimed they lasted longer than standard plugs and since the KIA V6 rear bank of spark plugs could only to be changed by taking off the inlet manifold (stupid design) the Iridium plugs meant this didn't need to be done as much.
I have nothing against standard plugs just putting it out there on the best all round plugs and gaps.

As long as the engine is in good order the plugs should last to near or go over the recommendations.

Ac Delco make a double platinum spark plug for the EA81 ... AC DELCO 41-804.

They are good for up to 160 000 km.

a little info from rock auto

champion does an iridium for the EA81

I have ac delco double platinums in my EJ22 motors and the don't miss a beat.

Thanks for the info all.
Could I pose another question.
Is it worth considering a colder running plug ?
Our weather in summer gets up to 35 to 40 deg C or so and down to (on a cold morning) 1 or 2 deg C in winter.
Generally nothing out of the ordinary.
If I normally run an NGK BP6ES does anyone have any experience and advice re colder vs standard plugs and part numbers ?

not sure about hotter weather really being the reason for a colder plug, think it is more the combustion temps, which ambient temps must play a tiny part in.....

Not much market for hotter plugs to help an old smokey engine keep its plugs cleaner a litttle bit longer - just don't see the smokey old dartsun 200B's much these days :p

I run colder plugs BP7ES with a lesser gap ~ 0.6mm for LPG which is a hotter burning fuel. NGK numbers go up the colder the plug, where some other never use brands, numbers ho other way for hot !

Incrased non iridium plug life came from unleaded over super grade petrol. I ran a set for 100,000km with regap at every 20,000km in ULP engine - probably to prove a point :) Only got replaced with a long trip in mind.

Ah, Datsun 200B, I had 2 of them, one being a 78 SX the other a 79 wagon.
Also had a 69 1600 with an 80 model 200B engine.
Put a 240Z 5 speed in all of them.
Loved those engines with the dual SU carbs off the 180B SSS.
Sorry I digress from the topic.
Thanks for the info people.
