Weird noise from engine

Post by Vortex75 » Wed Jun 03, 2015 11:43 am

Hey guys, I recently changed the oil and filters on both engine and auto tranny(ea82t, 89 Vortex), since then I have a weird intermittent noise coming from my engine bay whilst driving (sounds like the engine area but its hard to tell). It sounds like a whiney noise, its hard to describe. It only does it when under load, free revving in park and neutral are fine. Im a bit worried it might be the turbo
Canny.

Did you use genuine filters or aftermarket? Genuine are always better

Video - video !! Don't you hate finding something wrong after doin' a heap of things at once ?

Hmm, turbo won't boost up in neutral, so you may be right about the turbo cause, but may just be a hose come off the boost solenoid, rotted or something ? Do you have a boost gauge to read just what pressure you are getting and how smooth it is ??

So often when people say they have a funny noise or oil pressure problems they've fitted an aftermarket oil filter. I've had an issue myself, horrible big end noise on start up. Switched to a genuine filter & it immediately stopped!

So, I would check all your hoses as Nubaru said & put on a genuine filter. If its causing an oil issue your turbo and bearings won't like it. Genuine is only a few bucks more...

Changed oil and filter today, used 15w-40 and genuine oil filter. Hoses look ok, still got this whiny noise going on. Tranny oil level spot on.

I wonder, I got a whiney noise back when I drained out 80W90 and nulon G70 additive in my manual box, refilled with sewing machin like oil Catrol VMX - cold shifts a bloody dream first up at zero C !

I wonder, forget if the AWD auto has auto fluid for tranny, 80W for front diff ?

If you drained old fluids from either section, may have drained out someones additive package that quietened things down for sale time. Nulons G70 is for manual boxes and 80W90 oil type diffs, think it is G60 for anything using tranny hydraulic fluid - is good stuff !

Auto front pumps make a whining noise when things are on their way out but should not do it just from a new oil supply ?

gotta trust Nulon for their product and advice. I met the guy that picked the name for their "start ya bastard" - he worked for the company for 32 years - says something good about Nulon !

OK. I have pulled one of these E4AT's apart - forget if the front diff had 80W90 and auto had ATF. You check your front diff level Canny ? Guess its not the turbo then ?
